  • Originally crafted as woodblock prints by papermakers in the Edo period (1603-1867), Chiyogami emerged as a decorative element for household interiors. It drew inspiration from the vibrant kimono fabrics worn by affluent urban women, catching the admiration of rural papermakers. The textiles from Kyoto, particularly from the Yuzen area known for its refined fabric dyeing methods, served as a significant influence. Present-day Chiyogami remains a highly favored decorative paper, meticulously hand-printed using silkscreen techniques in various small studios throughout Kyoto, Japan.

Chiyogami was designed to showcase customary symbols that harken back to seasonal themes and propitious moments when intricate kimonos were donned. Symbolism like bamboo for adaptability, cranes for a long life, cherry blossoms to represent life's transience, and pine boughs denoting resilience, are among the numerous traditional symbols printed in an array of colors and captivating arrangements.

Employing top-notch pigment inks meticulously blended, the printers administer each hue individually, ensuring accurate registration and alignment. A solitary design could encompass up to 10 distinct shades. Every color is laid down independently and allowed to dry before the subsequent one is pushed through the screen via a squeegee.

There is an infinite array of Chiyogami patterns, and contemporary Japanese designers work tirelessly to create fresh, inventive designs and patterns.
